Culver Drive Recycled Water Pipeline Project

Irvine Ranch Water District contractors are replacing 1,200 feet of recycled water pipeline along the west side of University Drive and through the intersection of University and Culver drives.

Project summary: The project involves the excavation of portions of University Drive (indicated in yellow) and Culver Drive (indicated in red). This work is necessary to replace the pipeline and to relocate it where it is more accessible.

When: Mid-September through November.

Project impacts: The sidewalk, bike lane and outside lanes of southbound University Drive will be closed throughout most of the project. Temporary lane closures on Culver Drive will occur in the initial stages of the project.

  • The eastbound and left turn lanes of Culver Drive will be closed sequentially over a period of approximately five days (lower red circle on the map).
  • Westbound lanes on Culver Drive will be closed sequentially over a period of approximately five days (upper red circle on the map).

Construction hours: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to dusk on Saturday.

Project Updates+

Week of Jan. 14, 2019:

A ladder is being installed inside the recycled water vault.

Week of Dec. 17, 2018:

Slurry sealing was completed last week, and pavement striping will take place in two applications with curing time in-between. The final striping will be completed after the holidays.

Week of Nov. 19, 2018:

Final paving was completed last week.  Slurry seal is scheduled for Nov. 26.

Week of Nov. 12, 2018:

The new pipeline is in service and final inspection is scheduled this week.

Week of October 29, 2018:

Remaining items include abandonment of the existing 8-inch water main, removal of the existing meter vault, landscape repairs, and asphalt restoration.

Week of October 15, 2018:

Pressure-testing of the recycled water main is scheduled for this week. Installation of the meter vault is in process and expected to be completed next week. Construction is expected to be completed this month.

Week of October 8, 2018:

Nearly all pipeline has been installed. The remainder of work includes final pressure-testing, completing the replacement services to the golf course and the City of Irvine, and making final connections to existing pipelines. Due to intersection improvements planed by the City of Irvine, minimal pavement repair of the pipe trench is required.

 Week of September 17, 2018:

Construction began this week at the intersection of Culver and University. Construction hours have been designated to be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to dusk on Saturday.
