Sewer Siphon Improvements Project

Irvine Ranch Water District contractors will be making improvements to several of the District’s sewer siphons, which divert sewage flow under, over or around an obstacle such as a creek.

Construction will take place from April  2025 to April 2026, completing work at one location before moving on to the next.

Work in October will take place at S8 (Jeffrey & Alton) and S1 (San Diego Creek & University).

This work will include dewatering and cleaning of the line; installation of a CIPP liner; removal and reconstruction of concrete bench and stop logs; removal and replacement of manhole frames and covers; testing and coating of interiors.

Improvements at each site will vary, but may include some or all of the following:

  • Removal and replacement of concrete slabs
  • Installation of new composite manholes
  • Installation of flow control devices
  • Coating of concrete surfaces
  • Site improvements
  • Air vent installation
  • CIPP lining of siphon barrels

What: Sewer siphon improvements

When: April 2025 to April 2026, with each location taking about two months to complete.

Construction hours will vary by location:

  • S1: (San Diego Creek & University) 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • S3: (Michelson & Riparian) 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • S5: (Jamboree & Main) 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • S8: (Jeffrey & Alton) 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • S9: (Sand Canyon & Barranca) 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Night work near Sand Canyon Medical Center from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
  • S16: (University & Milano) 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • S18: (Harvard & University) 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

2025:

Month of October: Work will take place at S8 (Jeffrey & Alton) and S1 (San Diego Creek & University). Work at S8 is expected to be completed toward the end of November. Work at S1 will continue into December. 

Month of September: Work similar to the other locations will begin at S8 (Jeffrey & Alton).

Month of August: Work will continue at S18 (Harvard & University) with a review of the lining that was installed, making repairs if needed. New frames, covers, and a bench will be installed. Following that, interiors will be coated, final testing will take place and the roadway will be slurry sealed and striped.

Month of July: Work will begin at S18 (Harvard & University). The work includes dewatering and cleaning of sewer lines, installation of a CIPP liner, review and inspection. Traffic controls will be in place.

Month of June: Work will take place throughout the month at S5 (Jamboree & Main), including dewatering and cleaning of sewer lines, installation of a CIPP liner, review and inspection and replacement of concrete bench and stop logs. Smart manhole covers will complete the work at this location at the end of June. Work in July will move to S18 (Harvard & University).

Month of February: Following the completion of initial work at S3, Cleaning and CCTV inspection will begin at S5 (Jamboree & Main) and S18 (Harvard & University). There will be no major construction activities for this initial assessment phase, but traffic control will be set up for up to one week at both locations to accommodate the work. 

Month of January: The project will kick off with cleaning and CCTV inspection January 27 at S3, Michelson and Riparian View. This work is expected to take approximately three weeks.
