IRWD Water Treatment Operator Wayne Wright has won the prestigious Robert O. Vernon Award from the American Membrane Technology Association (AMTA). Wright was presented the award at AMTA’s annual symposium held in San Diego earlier this month.
Wright is a 32-year employee of IRWD and is the Operations Supervisor overseeing the Deep Aquifer Treatment System (DATS) and the Irvine Desalter Project Potable Treatment Plant (PTP), both of which use the same type of membrane technology to treat water for drinking.
DATS removes color from groundwater caused by ancient redwood trees. The plant went online in 2002.
PTP went online in 2007 and removes salts from groundwater in Irvine caused by years of agricultural use.
Earlier this year, Wright was named Operator of the Year by the Southwest Membrane Operator Association (SWMOA). He was nominated for the honor by his peers in the industry, which put him in contention for the AMTA award.
Wright has exhibited and demonstrated a working knowledge of membrane processes and a willingness to further his knowledge on a regular basis, positively representing IRWD in the water industry. He was one of the first District operators to join and participate in SWMOA when it was formed six years ago.
