Irvine Ranch Water District

Because IRWD water is a blend of local groundwater and water imported from the Colorado River and Northern California, customers may notice a difference in taste or hardness at different times of year. None of these factors affect the safety of your water.
For the next six weeks IRWD will be optimizing our system and using a larger share of imported water to serve customers in the Irvine area. Because water from imported sources is much harder than groundwater, customers may may notice the affects of hard water. Hard water, which contains more minerals, can cause spots on glasses or silverware. It is best to read the owner's manual for your dishwasher and follow the manufacturer's recommendation regarding hard water. Some other tips that may help reduce spotting include using hotter water, varying the brand and type of rinse agent or detergent, and adding white vinegar to the rinse cycle of your dishwasher.
As we continue to adjust the source of water supply, a small portion of our customers may actually notice softer water that is characteristic of several of our local groundwater wells that are often used to serve western portions of the District near Westpark Village. Soft water may feel slippery and customers may notice that soap and detergent produce more suds when washing and bathing.
