“Every year we are able to bring water education to life for thousands of students in our service area through the IRWD education programs,” said Public Affairs Manager, Shannon Reed. “Through this amazing partnership with Discovery Science Center, we are teaching the next generation about the value of this important resource.”

Discovery Science Center instructors provide kindergarten through sixth grade assembly style presentations focusing on water science, preventing water pollution and urban runoff, the water cycle, water recycling, the forms of water and water supply. The presentations use individual key-pads to keep students engaged and allow participation in a game show format. Grade-specific workbooks accompany these programs.

Middle school programs, also led by Discovery Science Center instructors, include workshops that culminate with a field trip to the IRWD San Joaquin Marsh. These programs are designed to encourage students to consider careers in science and engineering. Students conduct chemical water quality tests, participate in lab demonstrations provided by IRWD scientists and learn about the importance of water as a valuable resource.

IRWD professionals are available to visit high school classrooms and teach about a wide variety of topics including water sources and geography; water treatment operations and quality; water recycling; biology and chemistry; finance, economics and politics of water; conservation and home efficiency; horticulture; environmental science and stewardship, and careers in the water industry.
