Did you know that IRWD offers in-classroom water education programs?  Through a partnership with the Discovery Science Center, kindergarten through eighth grade classes in the IRWD service area can access these free programs.  Signups are now being taken for the current school year.

Your school can benefit from IRWD’s long commitment to school education in combination with Discovery Science Center’s well-known innovative approach to learning. There is no charge for these important lessons about Southern California’s precious water resources and Discovery Science Center instructors come to your school to provide these programs.

The kindergarten through sixth grade assembly-style programs focus on science, conservation, water delivery and treatment concepts. Each presentation utilizes a high-tech set of individual keypads to allow for hands-on student participation while enabling instructors to track what students are learning. Accompanying this interactive program are grade-specific educational booklets, highlighting IRWD’s education mascot, Aqua Duck.

Sixth through eighth grade classes participate in a series of three career-linked, hands-on water chemistry and environmental resources-focused lessons. The lessons are followed by a field trip to the IRWD San Joaquin Marsh, where students receive a live lab demonstration, a virtual Michelson Water Recycling Plant tour and conduct tests to determine aspects of water quality.

These educations programs provide a key Best Management Practice under the California Urban Water conservation Council’s memorandum of understanding dedicated to increasing efficient water use statewide and  meet the science content standards for each grade level set forth by the State of California.

Now that school is back in session, teachers and school science coordinators are encouraged to sign up for IRWD free water education programs by calling (714) 913-5030. Please visit www.irwd.com for more information about all of IRWD’s education programs.
