When complete, NTS will include 31 water quality wetland sites designed to help clean urban runoff in central Orange County and to improve water quality in Upper Newport Bay.

NTS wetlands use natural processes to remove the various pollutants, including fertilizers, pesticides, bacteria, automobile fluids, brake linings and trash that are picked up by urban runoff and enter the watershed that empties into Upper Newport Bay. This bay is one of the last remaining estuaries in Southrn California where freshwater and ocean water mix to provide a lush habitat for hundreds of species of plants, birds, fish, and other wildlife.

The NTS by itself can not solve all of the water quality challenges of the watershed. Rather, it is a regional project that provides significant pieces to the the puzzle of improving water quality in Upper Newport Bay.

To date, NTS wetland sites in service include locations in the City of Irvine at Marshburn, Old Laguna Canyon, Portola Parkway, Quail Meadow, Quail Springs, Trabuco, Turtle Ridge and Woodbridge. In the City of Orange there is also an NTS site at El Modena Park.

The Quail Springs NTS site is located adjacent to the 405 Freeway at the Sand Canyon exit.
