Irvine Ranch Water District

Because we live in a semi-arid area that is essentially a desert, water conservation is important both in wet years and dry. IRWD's allocation based conservation rate structure rewards conservation and penalizes water waste. Customers who use water wisely pay rates that are among the lowest in Orange County.
Please preview the 2012-13 Proposed Rates.
The following "at a glance" rates are for customers who have a dedicated landscape irrigation meter. Complete water rate information is available in the IRWD Rates and Charges document, adopted by the IRWD Board in June 2011.
Allocation Formula
ET x Kc x 1.42 x LA = landscape allocation in acre-inches. To convert CCF, multiply by 36.3. CF stands for "hundred cubic feet." One CCF equals approximately 748 gallons.
The four factors used to determine an allocation for a particular landscape are:
- ET (evapotranspiration) - from IRWD weather stations located in coastal, central or foothill zones.
- Kc (crop coefficient) - is the relative amount of water warm-season turf needs at various times of the year.
- 1.42 - is a proxy for 71 percent irrigation system efficiency. No irrigation system is 100 percent efficient, IRWD assumes a 71 percent efficiency level and allocates extra water through this formula to account for inefficiencies in your irrigation system.
-
LA (landscape acreage): we asume 100% of the landscape is warm-season turfgrass.

Since the allocation changes weekly, the most effective way to avoid overuse charges is to monitor the usage weekly (using the meter/allocation log sheet) and compare it to the weekly allocation.
