Turning Off Your Water

There are two ways to shut off your water so you can detect leaks and make repairs. As a general rule, the "house valve" shuts off water to the inside of the home, while the "customer valve" shuts off water to both the inside and outside of the home.

The "house valve" is usually located on a hose bib where the plumbing service line enters the home. A hose bib is an exterior water faucet with a threaded end to connect a lawn or garden hose. This can be located inside your garage, or in a side or front yard. The house valve is usually a round handle. Turn the handle clockwise to turn the water off.

The "customer valve" is located in your meter box on the side closest to your house, not the street. This valve looks like a handle*. When turned 1/4 of the way so that it is perpendicular to the pipe, the water will be turned off.

*Customers in Lake Forest may have a different type of meter valve. Please contact Customer Service for assistance.
