Landscape irrigation accounts for 40 to 50 percent of total water used in our service area. IRWD encourages optimum irrigation efficiency through the use of:
- Water allocations and a rate structure which reward efficiency and discourage waste.
- More low-water-use plants and less turf grass in landscape design.
- High-efficiency irrigation technology.
- Water-use efficiency surveys.
- Free residential and professional landscape workshops.

Water Allocations - Based on Weather and Plant Water Needs
With thousands of acres of gardens, parks and greenbelts within our borders, IRWD relies upon accurate weather station data to provide you, our customer, with the correct water allocations necessary for optimum plant health. Landscape allocations vary daily, along with the weather, and are calculated as a monthly total on each water bill.
Water Rates Show it Pays to be Efficient
IRWD customers who use water within their monthly allocations are rewarded with some of the lowest rates in Orange County. Those who exceed their allocations are assessed higher charges to signal that they are overusing water. Customers who identify and remedy their water over-use may be eligible for a courtesy bill adjustment.
Surveys Pinpoint Over-Use
IRWD provides free water use surveys to help identify and remedy the causes of outdoor water waste, such as over-watering, irrigation system leaks and broken spray heads. We can also provide you with information on how to regularly adjust the scheduling of your irrigation controller(s) to match the changing weather and water needs of your plants.
