Project Overview

Well 107 in the City of Irvine is currently low in production and the life expectancy of the well has diminished. IRWD studied the options and recommend re-drilling of this well.

Background

Well 107 was originally constructed in 1991. Located near Culver Drive and I-5 Freeway, this well is currently part of the District's drinking water system but has consistently had reduced production. In addition to low production, IRWD's access to the well at times is difficult.

What's Going On Now

Week of May 14, 2012

This week IRWD connected Wll 107's new 12-inch drain line.  Crews also tied in another nearby well (Well 115) discharge line into the Well 107 system.  Installation of below ground piping is nearly complete.

Week of May 7, 2012

Crews successfully completed the tie-in of the new discharge piping.

Week of April 30, 2012

This week workers completed the installation of above and below ground piping and began pressure testing the newly constructed discharge piping systems.  This weekend the pipeline at Culver and the I-5 freeway will be capped.  After capping the pipeline, crews will proceed with the demolition of the pressure reducing vault located on the northwest corner of Culver Drive and Trabuco Road.  The current schedule indicates well startup is planned for September 2012.

Week of April 23, 2012

Crews began excavation for the 10-inch discharge pipeline.  Crews also received delivery of new electrical equipment for the site.

Week of April 16, 2012

Installation of underground piping continued.

Week of April 9, 2012

Work continued on the aboveground and underground piping.

Week of April 2, 2012

Crews continued on the above ground and underground piping.

Week of March 26, 2012

The underground drain and discharge piping was delivered to the site this week.  Although rainy conditions hampered construction at the beginning of the week, crews began installing an air vac at the end of the week.

Week of March 19, 2012

The above ground piping installation began this week.  Crews also began constructing the pump base.

Week of March 5, 2012

Crews completed the destruction of old well 107.  An existing valve and its accompanying piping, located at the corner of Trabuco Road/Culver Drive, is no longer needed so it too will be destroyed.  This work will occur in upcoming weeks.

Week of February 27, 2012

In addition to the destruction of the former well 107 continuing, crews continued with the excavation of the 16-inch pipeline.  In order to alleviate a potential conflict, an existing air vac was relocated.

Week of February 13, 2012

Demolition of the former well 107 continued.

Week of February 6, 2012

All sound panels and pumping equipment were demobilized.  Crews began the destruction of the former well 107 this week.  This work will continue through next week.

Week of January 30, 2012

Crews installed temporary construction fencing around a portion of the well site.  Preparations began for the February 6 planned demolition of the old well, located off Trailing Vine within the Tamarisk Community Association.

Week of January 23, 2012

Crews completed the well disinfection this week and also conducted a video camera of the well.  The sound panels were also removed this week.  Crews plan to demolish the old well and work is scheduled from February 6-17.  Crews will mobilize February 6 with rig and equipment in front of the existing well site.

Week of January 16, 2012

Crews completed the constant rate test this week.

Week of January 9, 2012

The next part of well development is the constant rate test, which will confirm the pump size needed.  This test was originally scheduled for this week but was postponed due to limited Peters Canyon Channel capacity as a result of the County of Orange's channel widening project near Barranca Parkway.  Staff continued working with Orange County Flood Control District to determine when the constant rate test can be conducted.

Week of January 2, 2012

Crews continued well development, completing the step drawdown test.

Week of December 26, 2011

Well development continued.  A separate crew removed some shrubbery and concrete in preparation of the new well site.

Week of December 19, 2011

Well development continued.

Week of December 12, 2011

Crews continued with well development and potholing for existing utilities.  This work is expected to continue for the next couple of weeks.

Week of December 5, 2011

Well development continued this week as crews disinfected, swabbed and air lifted the well.  A separate crew potholed the existing utilities including the 16-inch and 10-inch pipelines.

Week of November 28, 2011

Crews installed the stainless steel casing and gravel pack.  Well development began this week.

Week of November 21, 2011

The crew continued reaming operations.

Week of November 14, 2011

Crews began reaming the well's pilot hole.  The goal for completing the mechanical well development is next week.  As the well is developed, water from the well will be discharged directly into the nearby Orange County Flood Control District (OCFCD) channel per the OCFCD permit.

Week of November 7, 2011

Staff completed the well design this week and the stainless stell casing has been ordered.  Based on the isolated aquifer zone testing, the well is expected to produce approximately 1,000 gallons of water per minute.

Week of October 31, 2011

The aquifer zone testing was completed and hydrogeologists are awaiting the water quality test results from the aquifer zone tests.  It is estimated that in two weeks the well design will be complete, and the well's casing and gravel pack will be ordered.

Week of October 24, 2011

Aquifer zone testing continued this week and included water quality sampling within three aquifer zones.

Week of October 17, 2011

Crews completed drilling the well's pilot hole and began aquifer zone testing.  A separate crew began the demolition of the existing well's above-ground piping, pipe support concrete and began excavating around the existing light.

Week of October 10, 2011

The crew began installing the sound panels in preparation for 24/7 well drilling.

Week of October 3, 2011

The well's conductor casing was installed.  The installation of the sound panels is scheduled for next week and well drilling will begin shortly thereafter.

Week of September 26, 2011

Crews worked to clear portions of the site in preparation for the sound walls, which will be installed in the near future.  The temporary construction fencing was also installed this week.  The fencing will assist in securing the construction site.

Week of September 19, 2011

IRWD has secured all of the necessary permits and crews plan to mobilize to the site shortly.

Description & Timeline

Well 107 is located on the corner of Culver Drive/I-5 Freeway in the City of Irvine.  This well, originally drilled by The Irvine Company, was transferred to IRWD in 2004 and is a part of the District's drinking water system.  Although the well was rehabilitated a few years ago, water production has continued to decrease and the well is nearing the end of its useful life.

In addition to low production, because the well is located in a residential community with limited parking, it has been very hard to properly access the well for maintenance and water quality sampling.  After reviewing its options, IRWD intends to destroy the existing well and redrill a new one.  The new well will be located outside the residential community and near the Orange County Flood Control Channel.

Construction began late summer 2011 and work is expected through mid-2012.  When the project is complete, water will be pumped from this well, disinfected and then distributed within the IRWD service area.
