Irvine Ranch Water District honored five South Orange County water districts on June 13 for their long history of creative cooperation on water resources and financial issues. The districts receiving the honor at from the IRWD Board of Directors are: El Toro Water District, Moulton Niguel Water District, Santa Margarita Water District, Trabuco Canyon Water District and South Coast Water District.

Partnerships range from collaboration on imported water infrastructure projects, to conservation programs, local projects, educational programming and events, legislative teamwork and many elements of regional water programs.

One recent success was the partnering on the South Orange Interconnection Project, where IRWD, Santa Margarita, Moulton Niguel and South Coast and a few other agencies came together to develop a series of projects to address reliability and bolster the redundancy in the system. These projects include interties, emergency storage and treatment facilities. This project was an example of agencies coming together to develop and implement a proactive plan to bring water to South Orange County during a temporary water supply shortage.

IRWD, Trabuco Canyon and El Toro have collaborated with the city of Lake Forest throughout the years as each of the districts serve portions of the city. Coordinated communication was especially important during the state’s recent drought.

Successes achieved by IRWD were made possible by these districts’ dedication, willingness to support and implement creative programs and the knowledge that together we can, and did, make a difference.
