| IRWD is busy in the community constructing several projects for improved service. Here’s a summary of a few of those projects.
Bake Parkway and Muirlands Pipelines
IRWD will construct a 24-inch reclaimed water pipeline in Bake Parkway (from Muirlands Blvd. to Irvine Center Drive) through the cities of Irvine and Lake Forest. In addition, IRWD will construct a 12-inch pipeline from Muirlands Blvd. to Bake Parkway. This pipeline is part of the Irvine Desalter Project and will carry the brine (salt) removed from the local groundwater basin. IRWD will also modify a small portion of an existing sewer line in Muirlands Blvd., leading to the Los Alisos Water Reclamation Plant.

Harvard Avenue Trunk Sewer
Irvine Ranch Water District will expand the Harvard Avenue Trunk Sewer for the area surrounding Harvard and Main in the City of Irvine. Sewage for this area is currently sent to the Orange County Sanitation District. The sewage will soon be diverted to the Michelson Water Reclamation Plant for treatment and recycled water production. Construction begins in summer 2007 and is expected to be completed in spring 2008.

Natural Treatment System - El Modena Park Construction Project to Help Keep Ocean Clean
IRWD has begun work at the park on one of 31 sites in its Natural Treatment System project. The purpose of the project is to clean urban runoff that would otherwise flow to the ocean untreated. Even though El Modena Park is miles inland, water that runs through the park can have a major impact on water quality in Upper Newport Bay and the Pacific Ocean. "Urban runoff" is excess water caused mainly by people overwatering their landscaping. That wasted water carries pollutants like fertilizer that can impact the quality of water at beaches. This project does NOT affect your drinking water. The existing basin on the west side of Hewes Ave. is being reconstructed to allow water from the concrete flood control channel to instead flow through new wetlands vegetation that is planted in the basin. Plants like bulrush and cattails help to clean the water naturally.

Natural Treatment System - Project in Local Flood Control Channels to Help Improve Water Quality
IRWD has begun work at three locations within local flood control channels in Irvine and Tustin, as part of its Natural Treatment System project. The purpose of the project is to clean urban runoff that would otherwise flow to the ocean untreated. Even though Irvine and Tustin are miles inland, water that runs through San Diego Creek and its tributary channels has a major impact on water quality in Upper Newport Bay and the Pacific Ocean. "Urban runoff" is excess water caused mainly by people overwatering their landscaping. That wasted water carries pollutants like fertilizer that can impact the quality of water in the Bay and the ocean. This project does NOT affect your drinking water.
