IRWD Contracts with Edison for Water Meter Readings
Irvine Ranch Water District (IRWD) has contracted with Southern California Edison (SCE) for meter reading service since June 1995.

IRWD decided to outsource meter reading tasks after thorough in-house review. Consolidating utility meter reading under one agency has reduced IRWD's annual operating costs by approximately $160,000.

Selecting SCE has also resulted in greater efficiency by allowing one individual to accomplish what previously required two people.

SCE has considerable experience reading water meters and currently provides this service to several cities and water districts. SCE uses an automated, hand-held meter reading system which can be downloaded in an SCE office and transferred electronical ly to IRWD the same date. Cumbersome meter books have been eliminated and billing can be processed automatically.

IRWD's mission is to provide services in an efficient, cost-effective manner. Though the District is a public agency, many operations have been privatized to take advantage of fast-changing technology and an up-to-date pool of resources and skills. The District also outsources specific tasks to minimize staff size. These include janitorial services, laboratory equipment maintenance, specialized fleet maintenance, and landscape maintenance.
